Author and inspiring motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said, "Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune." and I couldn’t agree more.
Creativity is often described as simply connecting the dots between all the different pieces of information in your head. If that’s true, then seeking out new, interesting and challenging sources of information will enhance and accelerate that process.
I reconnected recently with a woman who runs a very successful Financial Planning business, turning over in excess of £3M already, and with even bigger plans for the future. She had recently travelled to the US, with her General Manager, to attend a business training session on how to scale up your business. It wasn’t financial services specific. In fact, it was organised by marketing experts Infusionsoft.
It seems like an obvious thing to do; get outside the profession and expand your thinking. Yet I can only think of a small cohort of advisers who seem to do this.
This September I’m off to the Insiders Forum (24th- 26th). It’s a conference organised by Bob Veres, and is a real-world extension of his Inside Information resource for Financial Planning, aimed at “experienced fiduciary financial advisory business professionals.” The topics are advanced and business-development oriented. I’m hoping I’ll run into some UK advisers, who are taking extra steps to widen their knowledge, while I’m there .
